And just like that 2018 has come to an end! I feel like this year went by quickly, at the least the second half of it did. I know these yearly favorites posts can become long and tedious so before I ramble on too much let’s just get into the products that really stood out to me this year!
I feel like I really found a good primer concoction when I started combining this with a few other products (read more about those items here), but even on it’s own this primer consistently impresses me. It’s super tacky, so my makeup just sticks to it like glue all day long. It never clings to any dry patches I may have, and I feel like it does a good job at keeping my oil at bay for a few hours.
I have been seeing this in a lot of people’s yearly favorites, and I can totally understand why. This product is perfectly named, it truly does give me a silk like canvas to put my make up on. I have larger pores around my nose and chin and this putty manages to smooth them out without breaking me out or pilling up underneath foundation.
This has been, hands down, my most used foundation of 2018. It is my go-to day to day foundation, it always looks natural and effortless no matter how my skin is behaving. The coverage is light, but I can layer this to get a nice medium coverage without it looking caked on. I have oily skin, so I always have to make sure to set this with a powder because it is a more luminous finish, but it never makes me look greasy. I am already halfway through my second bottle!
Fenty Beauty has been such a standout brand this year, and their flagship foundation has been my go-to choice for heavier coverage days. When my skin is acting up, I always reach for this. It has medium to heavy coverage depending on how much you sheer it out with a beauty blender, but it never looks cakey on my skin. It has a matte finish which is great at killing my shine, but it doesn’t look flat or mask-like. I love the way my bronzer/blush/highlight blends into this foundation, and it stays forever on my skin before it starts to fade.
I have to be honest, I actually have started liking this concealer better than it’s super popular expensive dupe, the Tarte Shape Tape. This concealer has great coverage but it never looks too heavy or dry under my eyes. I love wearing this with my Physician’s Formula foundation, they blend so well together. I do have to set this when I wear it under my eyes though, but after I do it stays creaseless all day.
I cannot recommend this powder enough, especially to those of you who have trouble finding a powder to set your under eye concealer. Most powders make my under eye area look dry and cakey, but this powder always blurs away any creases or patchiness. If my skin is looking a little off after applying my concealer and foundation, I just take a big fluffy brush and sweep this all over my face to get a smooth, silky finish.
When I first saw this brand’s display at Sephora I was seriously intrigued, the packaging was so cute and some of the products were super unique, like this sponge stamp blush! I love any liquid/cream face products, they just last so much longer on my cheeks, and this formula is one of my favorites! While the heart stamper is cute, I rarely use it because this blush is super pigmented and I need to blend it is quickly before it sets! I like to tap my beauty blender directly into the cushion and then apply it to the apples of my cheeks. I have been meaning to pick up a few more colors to try out as well!
I have spoken about this blush a million times before, so obviously I have to include it in my yearly favorites! I am usually scared of darker blushes, but this color is just so perfect I constantly find myself reaching for it. I can wear this blush and totally skip the bronzer, it gives me a healthy flush and glow. It has flecks of shimmer in it, but I never notice them on my face, it always looks glowy and natural. Read a much more in depth review of this blush here.
This large bronzer was hard to find, but I am so happy I did! I have very cool undertones, and most shimmery bronzers tend to pull way too warm on me, that’s why I fell in love with the perfectly balanced undertones in this bronzer. It has shimmer in it, but it doesn’t look chunky or weird on my skin, it just blends beautifully to give me a sun-kissed glow. It’s on the pricier side of drugstore products, but it is much bigger than most bronzers and super pigmented so I consider it well worth the money.
I have been loving this matte bronzer for a subtle contour for work. It has cool undertones, but it doesn’t look ashy or muddy on my cheeks. I like using this around the edges of my face as well to look a tiny bit more sculpted. This is one of the longest lasting bronzers I have in my collection as well, and when it does start to fade it doesn’t look patchy. You can read more of my thoughts on this bronzer here.
When I want a stronger, more intense contour, I reach for this magic cream contour from Charlotte Tilbury. I just dab a bit under my cheek bones and blend with a synthetic fiber brush or a beauty blender, and suddenly I have perfectly sculpted cheeks! This product is super pigmented, so the tiniest bit is all you need. The undertone is very cool, so I really only use it for contouring, not general bronzing.
There was an insane amount of hype around this exact highlighter, and I resisted the urge to give in and buy it for so long. Eventually though, I swatched it at Sephora and realized I had to have it. It manages to be both crazy intense and natural at the same time, I can’t really explain it. I can wear this over as many layers of powder as I want, it never bunches up or flakes off. It lasts all day on my cheeks, and it blends so smoothly with either a brush or a beauty blender. If you have been on the fence about this highlighter, give it a chance, you won’t be disappointed!
This is a powder version of the Hourglass highlight, both have a perfectly balanced white gold finish. This powder is very intense, so I have to be careful not to apply too much. It looks so smooth and shimmery on the skin, it never looks chunky or highlights any texture I may have. This is not as long lasting as the cream highlight of course, but it does last throughout the work day easily.
I fell in love with a few highlighters this year, and this is the most intense of all of them. It has the most stunning gold color with just the tiniest hint of pink in it, perfect for my cool undertones. It goes with every eye look and it always gets me a compliment! This is the best highlight NARS has ever released, hands down. You can read a much more in depth review of this highlight here.
When it came to eyeshadow palettes this year, there was really no competition for me; anything by Dose of Colors. For work I prefer a more matte eye look, and each one of these palettes gives me a good four or five matte cohesive looks all on their own. The Pretty Cool palette is a newer addition to my collection, but I am already in love with all of its neutral shades. If you like a simpler, more subtle eye look, definitely check any of these palettes out! I have already review the Marvelous Mauves palette here and the Baked Browns palette here.
Mascaras have always been tricky for me and my short straight lashes. Anything too voluminous ends up looking clumpy, and anything too lengthening gives me spider lashes. Enter the perfect daily mascara: Lash Slick. It has a fiber/tubing formula but it never flakes off or irritates my eyes like most do. This doesn’t give me crazy falsie level lashes, but thats why I love it for day to day use. It makes my lashes look fluffy and natural, and pulls together my eye looks seamlessly.
While the last few years have been dominated by matte liquid lipsticks, this year felt like a much more natural, glowy year for lips. I fell in love with this lip balm/lip stain hybrid immediately, and I rarely carry a purse that doesn’t have this in it. When I want a no hassle wash of color for my dry lips, I always reach for this, it matches whatever look I may be wearing. If I want a more intense color, I will add a bit of this over a nude lip liner.
Lip gloss has been my favorite accessory this year, they are just so easy to apply and touch up throughout the day. This shimmery nude from one of Kathleen Light’s Colourpop collabs is my go-to neutral lip, it pairs well with both warm and cool toned eye looks and cheek colors. It has a very opaque finish to it, and it lasts for a good while on the lips before I have to reapply.
Swatched, this gloss looks underwhelming I know, but I promise it comes alive once applied! It is basically a clear gloss with a bunch of gold glitter in it, but it makes my lips look full and beautiful without looking tacky and chunky. I love wearing just a touch of this over a nude lip liner or my favorite neutral lipstick. It doesn’t last all that long on the lips, but because it is basically a clear gloss it is very easy to re-apply throughout the day.
